Ruth M. Briese, 71, 71, Ruth M. Briese, 71, of Detroit Lakes, died at her home Wednesday, March 29, 2006, under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Ruth Marilyn Baird was born Feb. 24, 1935 in Estherville, Iowa, to Donald and Caroline (Eastman) Baird. She graduated from St. James High School in 1953 and married Donald Briese April 10, 1954 in Stillwater. They lived in Fairmont until 1955 where Ruth was a nurse’s aide and Don worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Ruth and Don moved to Cloquet, where she worked at the Cloquet Hospital and at the Jay Cook Fire Tower in the Jay Cook State Park. Later they moved to Isle, near Mille Lacs Lake; then moved to Floodwood, until 1975. At that time they moved to Grand Marais, where Ruth worked as a nurse’s aide, and in 1980 they moved to Grand Rapids. She worked as a nurse’s aide there until retirement in 1986. In 1988 they moved to Ottertail and in 1995 to Detroit Lakes. Ruth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.

She is survived by her husband, Don Briese of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Marilyn Erickson and her husband Tom of Bemidji, Joan Gervais and her husband Ron of Grand Marais; one son, Duane Briese and his wife Sandy of Galesville, Wis.; two sisters, Lois Hynes of Luverne, Mildred “Midge” Cole and her husband Don of Fairmont; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Glenn, Bob, Barney, and Bill Baird.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1 at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with the Rev. Dan Abrahams officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.

The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
