    NORWOD--Russell L. Murray, 64, a native of Norwood, died Friday at his home in Ormond Beach, Fla.
    Mr. Murray was a sergeant in the Potsdam Police Department and later was the director of public safety at Potsdam State University College. He retired in June 1995 and moved to Ormond Beach.
    He was an avid tennis player and a member of the Ormond Beach Racquet Club and the Daytona Beach (Fla) chapter of the 82nd Airborne.
    Born June 25, 1936, in Norwood, son of Earl and Gertrude Henderson Murray, he graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1953.
    He served in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Division from January 1955 to January 1958. He received his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and attended jump school at Fort Benning, Ga.
    In 1960, he received a degree in business administration from Canton Agricultural and Technical College.
    Surviving besides his wife of 39 years, the former Connie Callaway, are a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Shelia, Cortland; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and William Hershey, Canadice; three brothers, Dean, Rodney and Reginald, all of Norwood; a sister, Jean Pelletier, Hannawa Falls, and five grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Ormond Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, with the Rev. Charles Melvin officiating.

    Mr. Murray, a former sergeant in the Potsdam Police department and later director of public safety at Potsdam State University College, died Sept. 29 at his Florida home.
    Arrangements were with Ormond Funeral Home, Ormond Beach.
