2448.0 ROWLAND THOMAS He was born c1610 in Wales per family tradition. (7:2) He came to the Colony of Massachusetts in America in c1644, supposedly with 3 Loyalist brothers to escape Cromwell's persecution. On 29 Jan 1645 he was in Springfield, now Springfield, Hampden County, MA where he was given a land grant of 29 and one half acres, which he paid for on the time payment plan. (7:2) On 14 April 1647 in Springfield he married SARAH CHAPIN, daughter of Deacon SAMUEL CHAPIN and CICELY PENNY. (26:356) She was born c1630 at? They had 13 children:(25:175; 28:318)

The family lived in Springfield where Rowland was very involved in town activities, 3 terms as Selectman starting in 1664, town surveyor, Sealer of Weights and Measures, and Town Assessor. Rowland purchased many pieces of land for speculation.(28:318) He gave a 6 acre piece to the town for their first school in 1679. He may have been in Hadley in 1669 and in Westfield in 1670.(25:175) In 1675 during the "King Philips Indian War" Springfield was attacked and most of the town was burned including buildings owned by Rowland. He took the Oath of Allegiance at Springfield on 31 Dec 1678.(25:175)

Sarah died 5 Aug 1684 at Hatfield, Hampshire County, MA and Rowland died 21 Feb 1698 at ?. A fitting memorial to Rowland Thomas is the large moun­tain north of Springfield, Mt Tom, named after him.(7:1-13,228,229)
