1674, 24 Apr - Mrs Rose Gerard, widow, made a deed in consideration of a marriage contract between her eldest daughter, Rose & William Fitzhugh.

1677, 16 May - Mathew Steele confessed judgment to Mr. Jno. Newton who intermarried with Mrs. Rose Garrard for 670 pounds of tobacco. According to sufficient proofe made to this Court there is due to Originall Browne 350 acres for the transportation of Joseph Roberts, Wm. Morgan, Jno. Price, Eliz Constant, Robt. 1697, 28 Jul - HUSBAND JOHN NEWTON DIES.

[cos1776 20131203 Note: I'm not sure that the next 3 Gerrard v. Wheeler records are a match for Mrs. Rose Newton. Since Rose is already married to John Newton by this time - why would she be referred to as "Rosanna Gerrard" in these court documents?]

1707, 26 Feb - Westmoreland County Court 26th of February 1707/08 - GERRARD v WHEELER. Ordered that unless JOHN WHEELER doe appeare at the next Court to bee held for this County to answer the Complaint of ROSANNA GERRARD, Judgment to bee entered against him for what shall appeare due to the said ROSANNA, hee haveing notice of this Order. (WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA ORDER BOOK: 1707-1709 {Antient Press}, p 81)

1707, 26 Feb - Westmoreland County Court 26th of February 1707/08 - GERRARD v WHEELER. Ordered that JOHN WHEELER pay ROSANNA GERRARD, his late Servant, four hundred pounds of tobacco in full for wages due her as his Servant together with all costs als execution. (WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA ORDER BOOK: 1707-1709 {Antient Press}, p 86)

1708, Mar - John Wheeler was ordered to pay 400 pounds to Rosanna Gerard.

1709, 8 Jul - deposition of Rose Newton, age 80, widow & relict of John Newton, the elder, late of Kingstone upon Hull in England, master & mariner, late of the County of Westmoreland. She swore that William Newton of Westmoreland was the eldest son of John Newton & Mary of Stafford Co, deceased and that John Newton was the eldest son of John Newton, whose widow she was. Similar depositions were given by Thomas Newton age 31 and Benjamin Newton age 40, sons of John Newton the elder. It is stated that John Newton the elder broght his sone John with him to VA and Benjamin Newton waid that he knew Thomas Newton who lived in Hull, father of John Newton the elder.

    The Last Will and Testament of MRS. ROSE NEWTON, deced., was presented into Court by Mr. THOMAS NEWTON, Executor therein named, whoe made Oath thereto and being proved by the Oaths of ROGER DAY, ROBERT BOND and ORLANDO PAINE, three of the wittnesses thereto, is admitted to Record; And on motion of THOMAS NEWTON and his performing what is usuall in such cases, Certifycate is granted him for obtaining a Probate thereof in due form; and he is ordered to return an Inventory of the Testator's Estate to the next Court upon Oath; And it is alsoe ordered HENRY NETHERTON, WILLIAM DAVIES, JAMES JOHNSON and JOHN GARNER or any three of them being first sworn before one of her Majesties Justices for this County do some tyme before the next Court value and appraise the Estate and make return thereof to the next Court

    ... Dr. Gerrard's wife, Susanna, died before 1672-73, whereupon he married Rose, the widow of John Tucker, whose children were John, Gerrard, Sarah (married William Fitzhugh) and Rose, to which children Gerrard (then married to his second wife) made a gift.

    John Tucker's will was dated 5 May, 1671, proved 31 May, 1671. His two daughters were then under seventeen and unmarried. ...

    The widow Rose, relict of Dr. Thomas Gerrard, married secondly John Newton, who came from Maryland, and was the ancestor of the Newton family of Westmoreland. ...
