"MARYLAND OBITUARY
Mrs. Rosanna Offutt.
[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun]
Rockville, Md, Jan 30 - Mrs. Rosanna Offutt died suddenly yesterday of heart trouble at her home, near Potomac, Montgomery county, aged 69 years. She leaves the following children: Robert W. Offutt, of this county; Joshua T. Offutt, Joseph W. Offutt, Mrs. Laura V. Harvey, Miss Mary R. Offutt, of Washington; Mrs. Eliza M. Foley, of Bordertown, N. J.; Mrs. Rose Bradley, of Virginia; Franklin J. Offutt, of Montgomery county and a stepson, Dorsey W. Offutt, of Washington. Deceased was formerly a Miss Jackson, sister of the man who killed Colonel Ellsworth for attempting to take down a Confederate flag from Jackson's house in Alexandria during the Civil War."

Janie: Now that's an interesting bit of historical twisting; Rosanna Jackson was NOT the sister of James W. Jackson, the man who shot Colonel Ellsworth. Research shows Rosanna's brother, James Theodore Jackson was very much alive until after the Civil War. It was a cousin, James William Jackson, who killed the Colonel, the first casualty of the Civil War. The colonel's men immediately shot James William Jackson who died 24 May 1861. Rosanna Jackson-4 and James William Jackson are 1st cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are Captain John Jackson and Ann Wigginton.
