He was first married on February 14, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas, to Joanna Patterson. They had two sons and one daughter. He and Doris Elaine Wilson were married in Richmond, Indiana, on October 31, 1958.

He was member of the Madison Avenue United Methodist Church in Derby, where he sang in the choir and acted as communion steward, as well as being a member of a men's group. He and his wife headed the United Methodist Church committee, which distributed commodity foods in their area. He also volunteered for the United Methodist Urban Ministries' Second Mile program, providing transportation to people living in shelters.

In 2001, he and Doris received their 25-year pins for volunteering for the American Red Cross. At the same time, they were presented the Community Enrichment Award from Sedgwick County, Kansas.
