Ronald Landon Thiede was born December 11, 1946 in Grand Forks of Grand Forks county, North Dakota. He was the son of Alfred August Thiede and Edna Bernice Landon. He lived in Park River, North Dakota and then Walhalla, North Dakota. He attended grade school in Walhalla from the first grade to the ninth grade. He graduation from Junior High School in Walhalla on June 2, 1961. He moved with his parents and two brothers to Langdon in the summer of 1961. He graduated from Langdon High School on May 27, 1965. He attended Aaker College in Grand Forks from 1965 until August of 1967, receiving his degree on August 1, 1967. He enlisted in the United States Navy early entry program on May 16, 1967 and went to boot camp at San Diego, California. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock until February 2, 1972, and then transferred to the USS Lipan from February 28, 1972 until June 26, 1972.He served on the USS Abnaki, a fleet tug. He was discharged on January 9, 1974. He entered the naval reserves for a short time and re enlisted for six more years on January 10, 1974 and served again on the USS Abnaki attaining the rank of Yeoman 3rd class. He then served on Guam from March 10, 1974 until June 14, 1975, when he was sent to duty at the Naval Intelligence Command at the Pentagon in Alexandria, Virginia. While there, he was advanced to the rank of Yeoman 2nd class. After that he was transferred to duty at San Diego, California. He received his honorable discharge certificate as Yeoman 2d class on January 9, 1980. He has worked a farm elevator, the Grand Forks Air Force Base,and finally at the University of North Dakota in their Plant Services Department until illness forced his retirement several years ago. He lived with is mother until she was moved to Valley Eldercare center in Grand Forks in 2004. Ron was diagnosed with Chronic Leukocytic Leukemia in 1997. He took care of his mother until his health made it difficult to care for her. He was unable to stay in their trailer and moved to government housing later in 2004, where he has been until his illness forced him to move to the VA in February 7, of 2008. He was survived by his mother Edna B Thiede, Grand Forks, ND, two brothers, Ken( Donna) Thiede, Bismarck, ND, and Gary Thiede,Tuscon, Arizona He is also survived by his aunts, Hattie( Mrs. Orval Bragg), Manvel, ND and Esther ( Mrs. Kenneth Mathewson) Oweg, NY and cousin, Daryl Bragg, Grand Forks, ND and Judith( Mrs. Samuel H. Jackson), Walkersville, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Thiede on December 30 ,1983, and his grandparents, Ernest and Frances Landon and John and Anna Thiede. Amundson Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Wednesday February 27, 2008 in Grand Forks, North Dakota Pallbearers were Daryl Bragg, Roger Leeson, Faye Leeson, Barbara Leeson, Gary Thiede and Kenneth Thiede. |
