Ronald J. McCarthy, 66, of 1797 Vizaleea St., died after an extended illness, Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with his uncle, Bishop Paul Donovan, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 .m. Mr. McCarthy was a barber in Cascade and Bernard, Iowa, for several years. He became a securities and investment adviser and a life, health and accident underwriter, beginning that career in 1959. He was born on Sept. 8, 1932, in Dubuque County, son of Leslie and Helen (Donovan) McCarthy. He married Dorothy Feldman on Dec. 27, 1951, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. He attended grade school in Bernard. He attended three years of high school at St. Patrick's in Garryowen, Iowa, then graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque. He graduated from barber school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of St. Raphael Cathedral Parish. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; his mother, Helen McCarthy, of Dubuque; five daughters, Sheila (Greg) Setter, of Austin, Texas, Maryann McCarthy, of Laurel, Md., Julie (Bob) Gentz, of Eldridge, Iowa, Janet McCarthy, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Lisa McCarthy, of Dubuque; two sons, Ron (Jayne) McCarthy, of Dubuque, and Mark (Gina) McCarthy, of St. Louis; and 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Divine Word Seminary, Sinsinawa Mound and St. Raphael Cathedral.
