Former Huntington Street Department Superintendent and for the last eight years in street and highway work at Wabash, Roman Schenkel, 74, died at 12;45 p.m. Tuesday in Huntington County Hospital where he had been a patient since May 22. Mr. and Mrs. Schenkel had returned to this city three weeks ago from Wabash for residence at 930 South Jefferson St. Mr. Schenkel was born July 5, 1890, in Dallas Township to John L. and Amelia Spath Schenkel. He married Helena E. Gemmer on February 26, 1914. Mr. Schenkel was a farmer in early years prior to coming to this city where he served as street superintendent for eight years. He then moved to Wabash where he served four years as city street superintendent and the last four years was the Sub-District Superintendent of the State Highway Department at Wabash. He retired May 20 and returned here for residence. He was a member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ, this city. Surviving are the widow, four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Ruby D,) Zirkle, Fort Wayne; Mrs. Ira (Mary Frances) McBride, Indianapolis; Mrs. Donald (Wanda) Mickley, Huntington, and Mrs. William (Melba) Richardson, Phoenix, Ariz.; five sons, Harold L. Schenkel, Donald A. Schenkel and Warren H. Schenkel, all of Huntington; Dale E. Schenkel, Indianapolis, and Arden L. Schenkel, Marion; 30 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Esser (Mabel) Kitt and Mrs. Mada Yentes, both of Andrews, and Mrs. Russell (Mildred) Selle, Clear Creek Township. Two brothers, Alvin and Philip Schenkel and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Fruit and Mrs. Martha Bechtold, are dead. ***** Funeral services for Roman Schenkel were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Bailey Mortuary with Rev. David Schlundt officiating. Music was by Mrs. Mary Rowe at the organ. Pallbearers were Kenneth Schenkel, Paul Truby, Lamoine Gemmer, Carl Schenkel, Chris Schenkel, Keith Selle, Clyde Bechtold, and Gilbert Yentes. Burial was in the St. Peter's United Church of Christ cemetery.
