    Roelof (Ruliff) Cortelyou was b. near Cranbury, N. J., July 6, 1758; bap. at Six Mile Run, N. J., Oct. 29, 1758; d. April 14, 1802; m. Gitty (Gertrude) van Arsdalen.

Gitty "Vanarsdall" was born, according to theJohnson Bible records, on March 30, 1761, and d. July 12, 1833. The inscription on her monument at Cranbury, N. J., as read by the compiler and as shown in N. J. Hist. Society MS., states that she died July 12, 1833, aged 71 yrs. 3 mos. 13 dys. This would indicate 1762, rather than 1761, as the year of her birth.

Roelof's name appears in the records in several forms, - the first name as Ruliff, Rooliff, Ruluph, and Roelof, and the last name as Cortelyou, Cortleyou, Cartleyou, and Corteljou.

The will of "Rulef Cortelyou of South Amboy (Township), County of Middlesex, " was signed April 13, 1802 and proved May 13, 1802. In it he names his sons Albert, Cornelius, James, Henry, and William, and his daughters Catharine, Leanah, Mary, and Lydia. He directs that his lands at Six Mile Run be sold. He appoints his son Albert, his brother Henry, and his friend John Van Kirk executors.

This "Ruliff Cortelyou of Middlesex County" served in the Revolution.
