[edit] ObituaryRobert P. Zirkle, 86, of Venedocia, died at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at Triumph Hospital in Lima. He was born March 20, 1920, in Delphi, Ind., the son of the late Paul and Gladys (Calvert) Zirkle. He married Ruth E. "Becky" (Faller) Zirkle, who survives in Venedocia. Mr. Zirkle was a retired hay and straw dealer. He was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a P-38 fighter pilot in both the Pacific and European Theaters in World War II was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the 48th Fighter Squadron. He also was a member of the National Hay Association. Shane's Masonic Lodge in Rockford, where he recently received a 60-year membership pin; a member of the Venedocia Lions Club; a graduate of York High School; a ember of the Spencerville Veterans of Foreign Wars post and a member of the Honorary Order of the Kentucky Colonels. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Jean (Dick) Ringwald of Van Wert; one brother, James Zirkle of Venedocia; two sisters, Virginia Zirkle of Ottawa and Marjorie (Robert) Robinson of Severna Park, Md.; a grandson, David (Jennifer) Ringwald of Belvidere, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Carter Rippel. A brother who died in infancy also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 13, at Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia, with Rev. Wendy Pratt officiating. Burial will be in Venedocia Cemetery, with military graveside rites performed by Spencerville VFW post. Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, November 12, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, where Masonic services will be held at 5:45 that evening, and an hour prior to services Monday at the church.
