A good tradesman, he built numerous water wheels (sic) for operating pumps to keep the water out of the shafts on the quartz reefs. He also made all the coffins for the district, includingthose for the Chinamen. A funeral was quite an occasion at Waipori. Everybody stopped work and went, race, creed or colour did not matter; everybody paid theirlast respects.
