Robert Walton was baptised on 12th September 1814 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of a labourer called Joseph Walton and his wife Elizabeth.

On 17th May 1836, aged 21, Robert married Elizabeth Ward, who was also from Great Hale. She already had a two year old daughter called Elizabeth, to whom Robert became stepfather.

Robert and Elizabeth went on to have another six children together between 1836 and 1848, all born at Great Hale. Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Robert and Elizabeth living in Great Hale with some of their children. Robert worked as an agricultural labourer and shepherd.

Robert's eldest son married in 1857, and Robert's first known grandchild was born the following year. He had at least 25 grandchildren born in his lifetime, although several died young. Robert also outlived two of his children; his son Luke died aged 44 in 1883 in Leeds leaving a widow and three surviving children, whilst Robert's son John died a bachelor aged 39 at Great Hale in 1885.

Robert does not appear to have been at home on census night in 1881, when Elizabeth was living alone in Great Hale. Elizabeth died on 1st February 1889 at Great Hale, aged 76. Robert died later that same month, dying at Great Hale on 27th February 1889, aged 74.
