Facts and Events
Safsten graduated from Blaine High School in 1948. He studied education at Western Washington University and English and history at Brigham Young University, where he graduated. He taught social studies for 30 years at Bellingham High School and for one year at Sehome High. Many former students thanked him, saying his tough demands helped them become better students, said his widow, Mary Safsten. He served on the county Planning Commission in the early ’70s, and worked for 17 years as a backup immigrations officer in Blaine, earning extra money to support their family of 12 children. He served on four high councils for area Mormon churches, and was a bishop of the Bellingham Second Ward congregation. Safsten also wrote a monthly religion column for The Bellingham Herald. Services are pending at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2925 James St. Burial will be at Enterprise Cemetery. References
