Latimers of the Revolutionary War Era
Jonathan Latimer who was married to Lucretia Griswold served under his distant cousin George Washington and became Colonial Jonathan Latimer after serving through the battle of Bunker Hill and other battles of the Revolutionary War. Another cousin of Colonial Jonathan Latimer was Captain Pickett Latimer who served in the Navy in the Revolutionary War.
During the Revolutionary War, several of the Latimer family of New London, Lyme and Montville, in Connecticut, served beside Benedict Arnold and Isreal Putnam. It was the home of Captain Pickett Latimer that was the first house in New London burned by the traitor Benedict Arnold and his British soldiers. Then the village of Gorton was destroyed, across the river, and Fort Griswold was burned and the people massacred. At Fort Griswold, members of the family of Lucretia Griswold lived and were murdered by the traitor, Benedict Arnold, who likely knew and greatly loved Nathan Hale, friend of the Latimer family of New London where Nathan taught school and spent much of his time in the home of Jonathan Latimer and Lucretia Griswold. One of the younger of these ten sons wrote to Nathan Hale that he was sorry that he was too young to serve in the Revolutionary War. This was Robert Latimer who was killed by indians in Kentucky after the Revolutionary War.
