Dr. Robert Charles Grove, the oldest practicing physician in Shepherdstown, died at his home in this place last Thursday afternoon. His death seems to have been the result of a general break-down of his system. He had been in declining health for some months past, and several weeks ago was forced to take to his bed. His fellow-physicians of our community ministered to him faithfully, but he continue to steadily grown worse until death relieved his suffering. Dr. Grove was born 66 years ago in Sharpsburg, MD., his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Daniel L. Grove and the family one of the most prominent in that sector. He was educated at Columbian University, Washington, D.C. and began the practice of medicine forty-three years ago, at Scabbie, north of Shepherdstown. After practicing at that place and Swan Pond for sixteen years he moved to Shepherdstown, where he remained the balance of his life, except for a year in Martinsburg. Dr. Grove was a skilled physician and had a large practice both in the tow and county. He was always ardently interested in politics and was an uncompromising Democrat. He exerted a consideration influence in political affairs, his help being eagerly sought by the Democratic candidates. He had decided opinions on matters generally, and had the courage of his convictions. Friend and foe alike always knew where he stood on any question in which he was interested. He had many friends who were deeply attached to him, and his death will cause sorrow to not a few invalids in our community to whom he had ministered with skill and kindness for years. His services were given freely to a number who will always remember him with sincere gratitude. His funeral service was held last Saturday afternoon in the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member, and was conducted by Rev. John C. Siler, of Duffields, and Rev. J. W. Ware, of teh Episcopal Church his own pastor, Rev. Dr. Ghiselin, being ill at the time. Many friends and relatives from this neighborhood and adjoining counties were present to pay their last tribute of respect. The pall-bearers were Dr. G. W. Banks, Dr. N. Burwell, Dr. John L. Meyers, of Shepherdstown; Dr. S. T. Knott, of Moler's; Dr. R. E. Venning, of Charles Town; and Dr. C. C. Lucas of Kearneysville. The body was laid to rest in the Elmwood Cemetery. Surviving Dr. Grove, besides his wife, are two sons and six daughters: D. Locher Grove, of Washington, and R. C. Grove, Jr., of Shepherdstown; Mrs. E. T. Moler and Misses Nellie, Louise, Grace, Margaret and Edna Grove, of this place; also two brothers, Edward Grove of Harper's Ferry, and Philip Grove, of Sharpsburg, and three sisters, Mrs. William Blackford and Misses Sue and Marion Grove of Sharpsburg.
