The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow have photos, family trees etc. relating to John Marshall Cowan, the grandson of Robert. The Cowans were a distinguished medical family with connections with the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons stretching back to Patrick Marshall, surgeon of Kilsyth, (1631-1697). This collection relates mainly to John Marshall Cowan MD DSc LLD (1870-1947), the son of Dr J B Cowan, Regius Professor of Materia Medica, University of Glasgow, and grandson of Robert Cowan, Professor of Medical Jurisprudence, University of Glasgow. Glasgow PO Directory listed Robert Cowan as surgeon at 43 West Nile St. in 1831 and as M.D. at 13 Moore Pl. in 1841.

Margaret Barton BLACK married 2. Dr. Robert COWAN, who lived from 20mar1796 to 1841, on 22jul 1826 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire. The will of “Robert COWAN, surgeon in Glasgow, husband of Margaret Barton BLACK or COWAN” is registered 24dec1841. The will of “Margaret COWAN, died at Glasgow, widow of Dr. Robert COWAN, physician at Glasgow, and former spouse of William POLLOCK, manufacturer in Glasgow is registered 26apr1848”.
