Thomas West, Sr. was a land owner by 1755, as evidenced by the listing of "Thomas West and son, Richard," both taxable on the 1755 tax list of Granville Co., NC. [The land that was being taxed included (there could be other unknown lands) the 350 acres bought on 5 Mar 1754 from Lodowick Alford in Granville Co. formerly in Edgecombe Co., NC on the east side of Bear Swamp.] I am not sure if Richard owned land at this time or not - I may have records for Richard, but not sorted out at this time (17 Mar 2002). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Deeds, etc.: Source - Book "Abstracts of the Early Deeds of Granville County North Carolina 1746-1765" by Zae Hargett Gwynn, published by Joseph W. Remember that Richard West had land that adjoined Lanier! This connects the Fike family to the Thomas West family!!! -JGW ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I am not sure where this belongs!!! -JGW

EC 5-60 - Scott vs Herndon, Filed 17 Nov 1815. Thomas B. Scott complains that on 17 Aug 1801 for a valuable consideration he paid James Herndon they entered into an agreement. James Herndon to convey to Scott "one tract of land holden by headright and obtained by him this day as per certificate containing 200 acres, when he may make a conveyance thereof, that Scott is to pay the necessary and legal fee to the government its officers authorized to collect against the time required by law." Scott states he paid the state price for the land and all charges and fees, etc. and caused the land to be granted to Herndon by Patent from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, bearing date 23 Jan 1813. That since Scott caused the land to be patented to James Herndon he has departed this life intestate at least as to the land and that George Herndon, Cornelus Herndon, Elisha Herndon, James Herndon, John Herndon, Joseph Herndon, Polly Wilkins, Leonard West, Isabell West now Isabell Halkum wife of Hiram Halkum, Agnes West, James West, Richard West, Polly West now Polly Milligan wife of William Milligan are the legal heirs and representatives of James Herndon. The West children were children of Frances West, late Frances Herndon, Deceased wife of Amos West. Includes agreement between Scott and Herndon dated 17 Aug 1801. The agreement says Thomas B. Categories: North Carolina West Research Ben West has transcribed the Granville Co., NC Tax Lists from 1753 thru 1765 (a few years are missing). I wanted to make comment about this information and hope to get others involved with some research and discussion of this information: WE HAD PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT THAT... Richard was the oldest son born 1739 or earlier, while Thomas was the next son born 1744 or earlier. Now, these earlier tax lists seem to indicate that Thomas was born 1738 or earlier and may be the oldest son! In 1758 is Thomas West [Junior] the constable? How old would he need to be to be a constable in 1758? At least 16, 18, 20 or 21? If 21 years old, Thomas (the 1758 constable) had to be born 1737 or earlier! But by 1760 and 1761, we see Tom Jr. listed with his father again - WITH A THIRD Thomas West listed - who is he? Then to make all even more confusing, 1762 only lists two Thomas West (father & son) with the father as constable this time! CAN ANYONE SUGGEST WHAT MAY BE THE STORY HERE? - JGW
