Facts and Events
Richard came to America in about 1612 and was probably the first white settler in New Jersey. Richard met Penlope at New Amsterdam in 1644 and they moved to Gravesend, Long Island. After the Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the English in 1644 Richard along with five other men received a land grant in East Jersey from the Duke of York. They founded the village of Middleton. Richard became a member of the New Jersey Legislature (Assembly) in 1671. Richard ran away from home and enlisted in the British Navy. Later he left ship for New Amsterdam and married Penelope Van Princess. To this marriage ten children were born, seven boys and three girls. Richard died in 1705. References
