    p. 38.

Pierce estimates his birth year as 1615.

'His will was drawn April 23, 1677 [the transcribed will says 'this two and twenty daye of April ...'], and was proved in Portsmouth Oct. 28, 1678. His son Richard was executor and he calls him his "eledest son." '

Note that while the author describes a number of documents from Richard's time in Portsmouth, which are presumed to be reliable references, the ancestry the author has presented on page 36 is not considered reliable (see notes on page Person:Richard Pearce (6)). Richard's parents are unknown.

"That there were Pierces at Waltham Abbey in the middle of the seventeenth century also appears from the parish registers; and it seems more likely that the Richard Pierce who married Susanna Wright in 1642 [in Waltham Abbey, Essex] and is found a few years later at Portsmouth, R. I., was a native of Waltham Abbey or one of the neighboring parishes than that he came from the distant Bristol in Gloucestershire, on the other side of England.--Editors."
