Mary Newman (b. 1778, Hamilton, Lanarkshire) was daughter of Dr. Richard Newman TOLL (b. 1754, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, d. 1829), who assumed the surname and arms of NEWMAN by sign manual in 1802, and Grizel PARDY (b. abt. 1756, Hamilton, Lanarkshire) (Burkes Commoners vol. 2, pp 111-113, available on newman-family-tree.net website). From Burkes’s Landed Gentry: The Newmans of Thornbury Park are an ancient family, long traceable in Gloucestershire before the confiscation of Church property by Henry VIII, now represented by Col. Henry Wenmar Newman, who now possesses the family estate of Thornbury Park. It is worthy of remark that, while the Lt. Morrison above referred to, fought in the royal cause at Worcester, Col. Newman served with bravery and distinction on the same side, and received an addition to the family arms for his loyalty. The battle of Worcester was fought in 1648; and it is singular that the 2 families should thus become united in blood after a lapse of 200 years (J. Paterson, referring to Morrison, related to Agnes Stark, and Newman). From newman-family-tree.net: Col. Richard Newman of Fifehead (1620-1695) fought on the side of Charles II at the Battle of Worcester (1651) and became High Steward of Westminster, a post similar to Prime Minister.
