pp. 110 - 111:

"ELDER RICHARD KNIGHT lived in the westerly part of the Town of Cranston, near the town line of Scituate. He was pastor of the Six Principle Baptist Church in Scituate for fifty years, an influential minister of that denomination, a very acceptable preacher, and rather better informed than most of the ministering brethren of that persuasion. He wrote an able History of the Six Principle Baptist Denomination. In this work he manifested the ability of a well informed man, and much laborious research. It was a history worthy of being consulted in compiling every religious history. He likewise compiled a Hymn Book, and wrote and published some pamphlets for his denomination. The History of the Baptist was published in 1827. He was a man full six feet high, well formed, and presented a fine physique. He lived an exemplary life and was honored and respected. He was ordained to the ministry Oct. 19, 1809, when he was 38 years old, preached the Gospel of Christ 50 years, without compensation, as other ministers of the same denomination did, obtained his living and supported his family laboring as other men on his farm, and as a land surveyor, for which he was reputed to be one of the best in the State. Elder Knight had three wives; by the first and third he had no children, but by the second he had ten. Her maiden name was Rebecca Brayton. Two of these children are now living, one, Mrs. Juan Tillinghast, who now resides in East Greenwich, and is in the 74th year of her age. She has a son, Mr. A. K. Tillinghast, who is Freight Agent for the New York Providence and Boston Railroad Company. There are a large number of grand children, and great grand children of Elder Knight in this and other States. Mrs. Albert Briggs living at 55 Parade street in this city is a grand daughter of his. Elder Knight died April 10, 1863, at the advanced age of ninety one and a half years. He seems to have fulfilled his mission and 'Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch Around him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.' "

DEATH: Coventry, Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries By Dr. Bill Eddleman and John E. Sterling 1998 Greenwood Cemetery CY059

This cemetery is located west of Fairview Avenue at telephone pole # 59. It is 25 acres enclosed with a stone wall with a large 660 foot long wall along Fairview Avenue. Greenwood contains about 6000 burials with 4456 inscribed burials. There are 80 Civil War soldiers, including on Confederate Soldier, identified on their gravestones and probably more who are not identified.
James Arnold visited this cemetery between 8-17 November, 1904, "on Phenix Hill, some of these lots are well cared for, others more or less neglected, a fine receiving tomb in centre of yard" (Vol. 6, Books 12-15, pages 1-234 and Vol. 6, Book 17, pages 887-958). Amelia K. Whitford recorded this cemetery in 1986.
By comparing the 1904 Arnold transcript with this 1996/1997 transcript a number of replacement gravestones have been identified. Most of these are granite stones replacing older marble markers. In the twentieth century mechanized mowing equipment started to be used to trim the grass in cemeteries. The maintenance people responsible for this task removed footstones to simplify this task. In this cemetery apparently they also removed many of the children's gravestones which were often about the same size as footstones. Arnold recorded many more children's stones in 1904 than were found in 1996. Whenever possible the Arnold data was inserted near the parents with a note 'not found in 1996.'
The land for this cemetery was purchased by William B. Spencer April 23, 1858. Prior to 1857 this ground was covered with pines, oak and chestnut trees, which were cut down. Boulders were removed and a stone wall 2850 feet in length was built around a twelve acre lot. A gang of men worked for two years to prepare this cemetery for Mr. Spencer at a cost of $10,000. The original plan had 609 lots of 20 x 30 feet.
