These messages indicate that he was not necessarily born in Gainford in Durham, as previously thought.

'RICHARD HILDRETH, born in England about 1605; buried in Chelmsford, Mass., where he died 23 February 1693[/4], aged 88 years [citing his gravestone]; married first in England say 1627 SARAH _____, died in Cambridge, Mass., 15 June 1644 [citing Cambridge Vital Records, 2:600]; married second by 1646 ELIZABETH _____, born about 1625, buried in Malden, Mass., where she died 3 August 1693, aged 68 years [citing her gravestone].'

'This Richard Hildreth [the first immigrant] lies buried in the ancient grave-yard of Chelmsford, ... I distinctly remember having had his grave-stone pointed out to me by my father some thirty-five or forty years ago, and having read the inscription upon it, but it is no longer in existence. It is stated in a biographical notice of Dr. S. P. Hildreth, of Marietta, Ohio, ... that, according to this grave-stone, Richard Hildreth was born in 1612, [Reg. iii, 142]; but, according to the record in my father's family Bible, which, I have no doubt, was copied directly from the stone itself, he was born in 1605. ...
Richard Hildreth died (according to my father's record, copied, I doubt not, from the grave-stone) in 1688, aged 83. Another Richard, the son of James, died Feb. 22d, 1692.'

A death date in 1688 is not inconsistent with his will (written Feb 1686/7), and would help to explain why his wife (who died in Aug 1693) was buried in a different town, which was more problematic if she died within 6 months of him.

The gravestone cited in this source was erected by the Hildreth family in 1909 (according to another source). It appears that by this time, the date of death of his grandson Richard (22 Feb 1692) had become confused with his - see "Origin and Genealogy of the American Hildreths" (1857).
The date of Feb 1693/4 cannot be correct, since the inventory quoted in this source was dated 19 May 1693. It is likely that this was the inventory of his grandson Richard, and that this grandson died Feb 1692/3.

  11. Many compilers identify his birth place as Gainford, County Durham, England. This appears to be based on the belief that this was the only place in England with the name Hildreth dating back to the 16th century. Since then, the name has been found in other parishes in Durham and also in Suffolk (Hildreth Family Genealogy Forum messages 238 and 239, posted by Jane Hildreth Kelley). At this time, it appears that it is not possible to say for certain where within England he was born. It also appears to be impossible to say who his father was - many compilers indicate his father's name was Richard, while some say Joseph - however, it appears that there is little to no evidence for either.
