Facts and Events
He was a farmer and a progessive school teacher. He fervently believe inthe precepts of Horace Mann and Burke that education was the nations bestdefense. He personally attended to the instruction of his own childrenand after his retirement as a farmer he taught for thirteen consecutiveterms in the Heidelberg schools. Eleven of them being in the No. 5 or"Forge School" as it was locally known(1862-75). He had previously taughtthree terms in the schools of Penn Township(1854-1857) He learned tailoring from William Kunkelman, but only worked atit for about three years. His intelligence and education were definitely far ahead ofothers in his community for his time. His son Calvin also taught threeterms in the North Heidelberg Schools with four of his sons continuingthe tradition of teaching. References
