John Emanuel, like his father grew up and worked on the family farm untilthe age of Forty Three. There after he taught in the schools Heidelbergtownship for eleven terms. He made a collection of over four hundreddifferent woods. Of this wood he made a fine cabinet using 100 differentkinds of that wood, that contained eight hundred and three pieces. 

          He also collected birds eggs, of which his collection exceededover Fifty different species.

          He was engaged for awhile with Klopp & Kalbach of NorthHeidelberg, setting up all kinds of farm implements, Windmills, fencing,etc. He also clerked for them in the winter.
