Facts and Events
Named after his farther's best friend, Dr. Richard Heurtley. Richard settled in Stellenbosch and worked as a manufacturer of horse carriages. He owed a large part of Bird Street in Stellenbosch. Later in his life he farmed near Colesburg. In about 1840 Richard saw the need to establish a school for ministers ("kweekskool") in Stellenbosch. He and a group of residents including Magistrate van Ryneveld collected funds and bought the old magistrate property. They donated it to the church on the condition that they establish a "kweekskool". The school was inaugurated in 1859 and later became the world renown Stellenbosch University. |
