Alexander Bertin is the stamvader of the Daneel family in Southern Africa.

Whilst still staying in Belguim he fell in love with a working class women. His wealthy farther did not approve of the love affair and Alexander conceded but was saddened by it all. To take his mind of the matter his farther recommended that he travel to the East Indian islands on one of his ships and Alexander agreed.

The ship however stranded in a storm in about 1780 near Saldana in the current Cape Province. Alexander and a certain van der Merwe swam to safety. He then sailed back to Belguim on one of his farther's other ships but decided to return to the Cape of Good Hope and in about 1795 he emmigrated permanently to the Cape. It is rumoured that Alexander and his farther also differed about religion with him being of the Roman Catholic faith. What is however known is that Alexander died as a Protestant.

At the Cape Alexander befriended a Dr. Richard Heurtley and they both fell in love with two French women. Alexander and Richard married them on the same day (1 February 1801) but unfortunately Alexander's wife, Prancina Elisabeth Perot, died soon afterwards. He married again on 15 September 1805 and gave his first son the names of his best friend Richard Heurtley.
