Northants, and all rights, members, etc., and all messuages, lands, etc., appertaining under the name of 6 messuages, 6 cottages, 6 tofts, 6 gardens, 200 acres of land, 80 acres of meadow, 20 acres of pasture, 5 acres of wood, and 10s. rent in PRESTON CAPES alias PRESTON upon the HILL alias GREATE PRESTON: the said Edward Edwardes & William Trust by virtue of the said recovery to stand seised of the premises only to the use of the said Rychard Colles and his heirs for ever.

[from Scope and Content] It is covenanted between (a) Laurence Wasshyngton of Northampton, gent., and Johanna of the same; and (b) Peter Colles of Preston, co. Northampton, gent., and Richard Colles, his son and heir: (i) that the marriage between said Richard and Johanna Bonde take place before All Saints next following the date hereof (ii) said Peter and Richard to provide an estate in lands of the yearly value of £5 to the use of said Johanna during her life and after her death and the death of said Richard to the use of their issue (iii) said Peter and Richard to provide an estate in lands of the yearly value of £15 over and above said £5 to the use that immediately after the death of said Peter they remain to the only use of said Richard and Johanna and their issue.

Lincoln, and elsewhere in co. LINCOLN which they had of the gift of said Johanna by a charter dated 20 July 28 Henry VIII (ii) appointment of William Hallyday and Robert Merten, husbandmen, attornies to enter into said premises and deliver seisin thereof to said Richard and Johanna. - Gary Roberts' article in the Holiday 2003
issue of _New England Ancestors_ ("Welcome to the 2004 Election Year:
Additions and (a few) Corrections to _Ancestors of American Presidents_") mentions a fact that may have some connection:
"Among the great-great-great-grandfathers of Mrs. Alice Freeman Thompson Parke ... was Richard Coles of Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, d. 1528, father by ?? of Anne Coles, wife of Richard Pargiter. Their son, Robert Pargiter (d. 1558), was the father by Anne Knight of Anne Pargiter, wife of Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave (d. 1583/4) and mother of Robert Washington (d. 1620/21), George Washington ancestor #64. See George Baker, The History and Antiquities of the County of Northampton, 2 vols. (1822?41), 1:433 (Coles), 509 (Pargiter), 513?14 (Washington) and H.J.
