Following education at Oxford University, Richard Cobbs, "the Galliant Scot," served Queen Elizabeth I as a member of Henry Champion's troop of 110 gentlemen in the fight for the Protestant cause in France and Holland. With the religious wars terminated by the pacification of Ghent, he married Sybil Sheetz in 1576, and settled in Holland.
