[From Digital Library of Virginia ] Greenbrier County Legislative Petitions

To the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives of Virginia
Your Petitioner Reuben Huffman further represents, in addition to the evidence in papers A,
B, C,(sup>1 adduced [sic, produced] by him, that he enlisted in Madison County Virginia, in the year of 1777, in the first Virginia State Regiment; for the term of Three years – And was marched immediately out of Virginia, to the North, where he joined the Continental Army under Washington, and they are continued until the end of his term of service. During which time of service, your petitioner further represents that he was engaged in the Battles of Brandywine [September 11, 1777], German Town [Germantown, October 4, 1777], and Monmouth [June 28, 1778]; and that he was also at the taking of Stony Point [July 16, 1779]. He further states that at the end of his term of Service, which determined [sic, terminated] in the year 1780 – he was discharged from service and returned home, where he remained until the following year 1781 when he was drafted out again in the state service, and where he continued faithfully to serve his country, until the conclusion of the War. He further represents, that during this last term of service, he was engaged with the Virginia forces at the Battle of York Town [Yorktown, culminating in the surrender of Cornwallis October 19, 1781], where Cornwallis Surrendered. And after this Battle he was marched on to the Southern States, where he was engaged in several small Battles, in the State of Georgia. And during this last campaign, or term of service he was accompanied by many of his fellow county men, of Madison County, two of whom, he believes to be now living, distinctly recollected, he will name to your honorable Body – They are George Simms and Alexander Turley.
Your petitioner further represents that he is now 75 years old, and unable to acquire a
livelihood by daily labour. And is necessarily thrown upon the cold charity of the World. That he spent the Bloom of life, in the service of his Country, and now humbly petitions her, when no longer able to live without her aid, to save him from common fate of paupers, who have entailed it upon themselves by idleness or dissipation, and grant him such relief as becomes a grateful Country to bestow and a soldier to receive. And this your petitioner will ever pray &c
