    Case 23432: Recompence Wadsworth 1679.

[Note: the file copy of the will is torn, the following abstract comes from the recorded copy Vol. 6, p. 21. The will is the only document found in the file or listed in the docket.]
Will of "Recompense Wadsworth, now student of Harvard Colledge in Cambridge ... yet being apprehensive of my approaching end", dated 9 Jul 1679, proved "23 . 5 . 79" (23 Jul 1679), names my brother Benjamin Wadsworth "in order to his bringing up in learning" but if he die my youngest brother (not named); friend Mrs. Minott; "my other Brethren and sister"; "my mother & brethren & sister"; friend Mrs Hephzibah Minott; second brother (not named); third brother (not named). Mother (not named) and Mrs. Minott to be executor. [In the file copy, his friend appears to be Mrs Minott in both references, in the recorded copy it is harder to distinguish between mrs or mr.]

  3. Source:Savage, James. Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, 4:380, says Recompense is "perhaps" child of Samuel and Abigail Wadsworth. Source:Wadsworth, Mary Jane Fry. Wadsworth Family in America, p. 178, does not list Recompense as a child of Samuel and Abigail Wadsworth. However, the will seems to make it pretty clear he is, from the use of his mother as an executor (his father died 3 years earlier and none of his brothers were of age), the mention of at least 3 brothers but only one sister, and specifically a brother named Benjamin, the one who eventually graduates from Harvard and becomes President of the College, being given money to go attain learning.
