[Note: this work make no identification of the wife of Richard Mann, though speculating without any explanation or evidence that "Undoubtedly, he married (Rebecca ---) in the mother country, and, probably had no children there." By Richard she had 4 known children 1646-1654, granted administration on his estate 5 Mar 16[54/]55, m. (2) 1656 John Cowen, by whom she had 5 children 1657-1666.]

[Previous post: "Shows couple marrying in 1646 in Massachusetts, probably not based on original source documentation. Couple believed to have married 1636 [actually 1637, see below] in Norwich, England."
Response: date given is clearly based on birth of child in 1646 as earliest known indication of his marriage, as is, apparently, the birth estimate for Rebecca of 1626. Torrey clearly either rejects, or was not aware of, the 1636 theory, as indicated by showing no maiden name giving a different date.]

"May 25th 1638. The Exa[m]i[n]at[i]on of RICHARD MAN: of Ingram [Ingham] in Norff Tayler aged about 23 yeares, REBECCA: his wife aged about 30 years is desireous to goe into Holland to serve und[e]r the States" [citing "Transcript of Three Registers of Passengers from Great Yarmouth to Holland and New England 1637-1639" by Charles Boardman Jewson]. This article notes that the marriage of Richard Man and Rebecca Short on 21 Jul 1637 is found in Parish Registers of St. Julian's, Norwich, Norfolk, FHL film 993893. [The cited film may be viewed here, but is clearly a copy, the original (or at least older copy) being here, third line on left side.]
[Note that the commentary in article suggests even if age on examination is wrong (probable since woman seldom that much older than her husband, but if true implies a birth about 1608, or 1618 even if the age intended was only 20), a person married in 1637 is a stretch to be a woman who had a child in 1666 (age 58 if born 1608, 48 if born 1618) and the nine-year gap from marriage until first child "is disturbing" [i.e., as a sign of potential error]. Thus, further work is needed, probably in Holland, to determine if this is the Richard Mann who came to Scituate or not. [Clearly the likelihood is that it is not.] ]
