Rebecca Kempson was born on 26th January 1838 at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, England, daughter of a straw plaitter named Charlotte Kempson, formerly Sharp, and her husband James Kempson, a straw dealer. Rebecca was baptised at Totternhoe when she was seven months old. The 1841 census finds her living at Totternhoe with her parents and siblings; she appears to have been the third of four children.
By 1851 the family had moved to the neighbouring parish of Kensworth, and thirteen year old Rebecca was working as a straw plaitter.
On 11th September 1857, aged 19, Rebecca married Thomas Hawkins at Kensworth. In 1860 they had a daughter, Lizzie. Thomas appears to have died by the time of the 1861 census, when Rebecca was living with her parents at Kensworth and described herself as a widow.
Rebecca has yet to be researched after 1861.
