David Kempson was born on 24th November 1833 at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, England, son of Charlotte Kempson, formerly Sharp, and her husband James Kempson, a straw dealer. David was baptised at Totternhoe when he was about seventeen months old. He appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings in Totternhoe.

Some time between 1841 and 1851 the family left Totternhoe and moved to the neighbouring parish of Kensworth, where they appear in the 1851 census. By this time, David was also working as a straw dealer, like his father. David has yet to be researched after 1851.
