Rebecca Conkling, daughter of Pierson and Hannah (Marsh) Conkling was born on 1 February 1822 at Reily Township (Butler County), Ohio. On 27 December 1838, she married John Newton Ross. This marriage is recorded in the Conklin family bible and also in the Butler County marriage records. By 1871 the family had moved to Topeka (Shawnee County), Kansas where John was a farmer. An 1874 Topeka city directory lists John as a farmer with the family residing at Jackson Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenue. John was born on 19 September 1820 at Butler County, Ohio and died on 15 February 1912. Rebecca died on 9 July 1900. Both John and Rebecca are buried at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
