Facts and Events
My files include a photocopy of an old news item (source & date unknown, but after 1814, when she was marsried) -- a poem with the headline: "Committed to Memory by Rebecca Rowles when She was Seven years old, at Poughkeepsie, N.Y." This is good evidence that she was born there -- or, at least, moved there at a very early age. It also means that she did not move from Dutchess County to Steuben County until 1805 or later, presumably with her parents. ---Michael K. Smith, 31 August 2010. In a letter from Lucas Nebeker to his cousin, John N. Massey, he mentions "Matilda's grandmother" being buried near Covington when he was young (i.e., before 1830?). David Rowles's mother died 1803 in Steuben County, New York and is buried there, so this must refer to Matilda's other grandmother -- Rebecca Clark's mother, wife of Solomon(?) Clark. References
