Facts and Events
Rebecca was listed as Choctaw on the 1900 census (as were her children) by virtue of the fact that her father was 3/8 Choctaw. Documents in the Dawes Census Cards indicate the family was denied citizenship by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Citizenship Court. A letter related to her father’s case states that the Curtiss Act requires all enrolled members of the tribe to settle in the Nation in which they claim citizenship, or they will be listed as white, and since he was living in Texas, he was not considered a member of the nation.
