Nehemiah Hearne (Hairn, Hearn, Heirne, Heron) (before 1715-1760), saddler and planter, son of Thomas and Sarah (Newbold) Hearne, is listed in his father’s household in 1731 and 1739 tax lists for Somerset Co.; in tax list for 1740 he is listed in his own household. On 15 August 1732 Nehemiah Hearn was accused of ‘begetting a bastard child on the body of a certain Elizabeth Peacock.’ Thomas Hearne pledged ten pounds sterling that his son would appear at a county court to be held at Dividing Creek on the third Tuesday in Nov 1732. A jury found him not guilty on 21 Nov; he was nevertheless, compelled to pay fees for court costs. On 21 Sept 1745 Nehemiah received a deed from his father for 125 a. of Stanes (Stains), his dwelling plantation. A tract in Worcester Co. called Mt. Misery was surveyed on 17 Nov 1746 for Nehemiah; however, Worcester Co. Rent Rolls indicate that this tract was patented 29 Sep 1766 to William Adams. Nehemiah patented in 1746 a 50 a. tract in Worcester Co., Folly, and in 1748 a 75 a. tract, Sandy Hill (present Wicomico Co.). According to 1749 Debt Book for Somerset Co., Sandy Hill was patented 26 Aug 1748 and rent was 8 shillings per annum. The 1754 tax list for Somerset Co., Wicomico Hd., lists Nehemiah Hearne, and Negro James, in household next to his uncle, William Heron, Sr. On 22 Feb 1755 Joseph Scroggin and his wife, Sarah, sold 37 a. of Fairfields to Nehemiah Hearn, which was willed to his son, Elisha Hearn, in 1760. In 1756 Nehemiah Hearne and Betty Day, his wife, sold a 100 a. tract called Castaway, previously ‘granted unto a certain Thomas Walker now Deceased.’ On 25 Sep ‘she the said Betty Day and he the said Nehemiah in Right of her the said Betty Day’ sold for £30 the part ‘Standing By an Old Indian Bridge’ near head of Rewastico Cr. in Somerset Co. to John and Ralph Lowe.
