The English ancestry of Ralph Allen is discussed in detail by Carl Boyer, 3rd in his book "Ancestral Lines, Third Edition," published by the author, Santa Clarita, CA, 1998. Boyer discusses several possible parents for George and Ralph Allen, who were apparent brothers that settled in Sandwich, Massachusetts in the 1630's.

The most likely father of Ralph Allen is John Allen of Saltford, County Somerset, England, based on an indenture between Rice Davis of Tickham and George Allen of Saltford in 1627.

Ralph Allen was born about 1590, and died in Sandwich in Plymouth Colony. He married (1) Hester English and (2) Esther Swift.

Ralph Allen came to Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1636, and was able to bear arms in Sandwich in 1643. He was a mason by trade. He was also the overseer of George Allen's will.

"Some accounts of the Ralph Allen who was not son of the immigrant (George Allen of Weymouth and Sandwich) (the Ralph Allen, mason, whose wife was a Swift) had an earlier wife than the one discussed above, and by this supposed wife he had older children [JKA:Ralph 19-20; GMNJ 16:52]. John K. Allen reported the marriage at St Mary-le-Bow, London, on 6 May 1619 of Ralph Allen and Hester English, and suggested that this was a first marriage for Ralph Allen Junior [JKA:Ralph 20]. Given the chronology … this marriage cannot have been for Ralph Allen Junior of Sandwich, and the earlier children ascribed to him by these authors must not be considered part of this family."[1]
