Childhood

Rachel Ellen Marshall was born on 26th February 1877 at Peterborough in Northamptonshire, daughter of Rachel Ellen Marshall, formerly Linney, and her husband George Marshall. Rachel and George were not from Peterborough, however; in the 1871 census they had been living at Albert Road in Luton and both working in the straw hat making business. Some time between 1874 and 1877, the family left Luton and moved to Peterborough, where they lived at Bamber Street and George became a railway labourer. For whatever reason, the move to Peterborough was short-lived, and some time between Rachel's birth in 1877 and the 1881 census the family returned to Luton - the 1881 census finds them living back at Albert Road, where they'd been ten years earlier.

Apart from Rachel's birth in Peterborough, all her other sightings place her in Luton. The 1881 and 1891 censuses find her living with her parents and siblings at 46 Albert Road in Luton. She appears to have been the youngest of eight children.

Adulthood

Rachel married in 1899, when she was about 22, to a man named Harry Pedder. They had one son, Frederick Harry, born in 1900. The 1901 census find the family living at 71 Lea Road, with Harry working as a straw hat blocker and Rachel as a straw hat machinist. Rachel's father died in 1907 and her mother in 1908, both at 46 Albert Road in Luton.

The 1911 census finds Rachel, Harry and their son living at 10 Park Street West. By 1920, they had moved to The Moulders Arms public house at 2 Chobham Street, on the corner with Park Street. Harry was listed as the licensee from at least 1920, up until his death in 1940, aged 64.[9] After his death, Rachel took on the licence and continued to live at The Moulders up until her own death on 21st August 1949, aged 72.

Rachel left an estate valued at over £2000, which passed to her son Frederick.
