Facts and Events
The marriage bond for John B. Osborn's marriage to Caroline Gaddie lists Rachel Etherton's birthplace as Greenup County, KY. John Brown's Death Certificate lists her birthplace as Greensburg, Kentucky, which is in Green County, KY. I tend to trust the marriage bond more than the death certificate, as I have noticed several errors on the death certificate. According to Mr. Herb Scott (herb-scott@@mindspring.com) stated on 14 November 1999 that Rachel died in childbirth with her daughter Emily. The date of Emily's birth and the date of Rachel's death seem to corroborate this. He also states that after Rachel died, James left his children with relatives and went back to Indiana to settle affairs there. He was never heard from again. I later stumbled across a reference to Rachel Etherton marrying an Alexander Hudson in 1856. Perhaps Rachel did not die in childbirth as previously reported? In the Akridge genealogical information sent to me by Mr. Jack Shroeder of Bloomington Illinois, John Brown Osborn's mother's maiden name is listed as "Brown", which I believe to be incorrect. It states that she was buried in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. It is more likely that Rachel Etherton was his mother. There is also some controversy as to whether she died in childbirth with her daughter Emily in 1853, as Mr. Urban Bowen of Elizabethtown, KY stated in a letter to JD Abshier in 2000. A book of Kentucky marriages shows a Rachel Etherton marrying another man, by the name of Alexander Hudson, in 1856. To add a little more confusion to Rachel Etherton and her vital statistics, I stumbled across a Rachel Etherton (spelled 'Racel') in the 1850 census for Hart County Kentucky, no Twp. listed. She is listed as being 15 years of age and residing with what appear to be three male siblings (John 23, Stephen 19, and Harrison (sp?) 17) and her apparent mother Hannah Etherton, 58 years.
