James' son, John Brown Osborn, listed Indiana as the state that both he and his father James were born in. I tend to trust the marriage bond of John B., which states that Greenup County is the birthplace of both John B. and his father James. James' birth date was obtained from Urban Bowen, a Great-grandson of John B. Osborn. Urban Bowen lived in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in November 2002.

According to Mr. Herb Scott (herb-scott@@mindspring.com), James' wife Rachel died in childbirth with their daughter Emily in 1853. James left his children with his wife's parents (William and Mary Etherton) and went back to Indiana to settle his affairs, and was never heard from again. Evidence of this can be seen in the 1860 census, where John Osborn, Esquire Osborn, and Mary Osborn are listed as living in the Etherton household.

Some conflicting information about the date of James' death was posted by Herb Scott (herb-scott@@mindspring.com) on 14 November 1999. Mr. Scott gave James' date of death as 1853. This date may have come about if it was the same date (or same year) that his wife Rachel died in childbirth, and he departed for Indiana, never to be heard from again (and perhaps presumed dead).
