Phoebe was 1/2 Montauk Indian. Phebe is the Daughter of Samuel Dayton and Medlen. Samuel was the son of Ralph & Alice (Goldhatch) Dayton. Since Joseph was under coercion by his father's will to marry and leave the sea, perhaps Joseph thought that this was his way to retaliate against his father by marrying a "half-breed" (during their lifetime, marrying out of one's race was a matter not to be spoken of or tolerated well, perhaps that is why there is so little information concerning Joseph).
The other wife I've seen associated with Joseph is Abigail, daughter of Ralph and Alice (Goldhatch) Dayton. At no time, have I seen Joseph married twice. In any case, the ancestry of the Daytons remains the same except for generational difference, as far as the Daytons are concerned, since her father, Samuel, was a brother of Abigail, both children of Ralph & Alice (Goldhatch) Dayton.
