He was a U.S. Army, World War I veteran and was recognized as an excellent artillery man. He was retained in France for a period of eight months after the close of the war and was of great service during the reconstruction period. He spoke French fluently and proved to be a man of great value. After he left the army, he worked as an accountant in his father's lithographing and printing office in Dayton.
