From: Geschiedenis van de Joodse gemeenschap in de Pekela's 1683-1942: In the 1700's The area around Pekela was an area with a lot of "peat-extraction", Maybe the Jews were allowed to live there because they were selling goods to the locals so for economic reasons. The first Jews settled on the 5th april 1683 "Simon de Pool" he asked for a license to sell Tobacco. The second family was Daniel Jacobs, 3. Mosis Joesten (1695) and Mozes Lazarus ( 1698)In 1737 they built their 1th Synagogue. It looks if Oude pekela had not always had his own Mohel. Most of the circumcisions in Oude Pekela were done by a certain rabbi Fissel his circumcissions register must be the one on [5] Those registers were personal so it could well be that Jozef Philippus van der Laan is mentione in somewhere else According to [6] in 1750 (5511) there was a Philippus Jacobs Goudsmit who did circumcissions in Oude Pekela ( seems to be the same as Rabbi Fissel) References
