Philip Barton MCNAIR was born 10oct1828 in Barony parish (IGI) and christened there 22may1829 as 3rd child (scotlandspeople); he probably died about 1848 (family letters). According to the Gentleman’s Magazine (dec1847) he was born 10oct1828 at Portsmouth, England (McNair book 1960 supplement). According to the Wigtownshire Free Press, Philip, of Ardyne House, Toward, 3rd son of Lt. Col. James M’Nair K.H. of Greenfield and Shettlestone, died 11oct1847. The fact that an event in Toward, Argyleshire, is mentioned suggests an earlier connection of the family with Wigtownshire.
