James Stanser MCNAIR was born 6 jun 1825 in Barony parish, Lanarkshire (IGI). He was the 1st child (scotlandspeople website). He claimed to have been born in Canada (1881census) (L. Hooper). According to Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, he was born on that date at Fredericton, Nova Scotia (McNair book 1960 supplement). He served in the same regiment as his father from 1843 to 1844. According to the military record his ensign was 21 jul 1843 and his resignation 28 jun 1844. His address was Clarewood, Thornton Hall, Lanarkshire, according to his military records. 1851 census- James S. McNair (b1818 Glasgow) (this could be James Stanser McNair, b. 1825), military officer, lived at Crichton Royal Institution for Lunatics, Dumfries. In 1881 James Stimcer McNair (retired military officer, lunatic, b. 1824 New Brunswick) was at Boquhan Mansion House, Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, the house of his brother George Best McNair (census). James did not marry (family letters) and died on 28-Nov-1882 at Avondale, Polmont (L. Hooper). On the 28th inst, at Avondale, Polmont, N.B., James Stanser McNair of Greenfield.
