"Our Ancestors" (unknown source - sent to me by Bryan Buck) [Note comments about accuracy of statements - ole_crone]

Our Great, Great Grandfather Philip Irey came from Holland to Virginia about 1732. They were Quakers. [No proof found concerning Holland or Quakers. The family might have been Quakers but at the same time, every Quaker that married into the family was disowned for "marrying out of unity"]
Our Great Grandfather, also named Philip, came to Loudoun County, Virginia in 1804 and settled in the woods near Guilford, Columbiana County, Ohio about one mile west of Grandfathers old home where Uncle Fisher lived at his death. He was a blacksmith and a great horseman. He was a small, round shouldered man who feared nothing. His wife's name was Hannah Brown, a cousin of John Brown of abolition fame. [No proof about the relationship - Tom Irey disbelieves this.]
After the War of 1812 companies of militia were organized and all able-bodied men under a certain age were required to muster for drill or pay a fine, and if they failed to pay the fine the constable was authorized to levy one and sell enough to pay the fine. Our Great Grandfather, being a Quaker, refused to pay the fine, so the men came to take some goods, but he stood on the porch with gun in hand and warned them that he would shoot the first man that came inside the gate. Knowing that he would do what he said he would, they left without anything and that ended the muster business.
Our Great Grandfather, Philip Irey, died in 1840 or 1842. Nothing concerning the birth nor death of Hannah Brown Irey, our Great Grandmother. Our Great Grandparents were buried in Woodsdale Cemetery (N.W. corner). (Goes on to discuss the family of Dawson Irey, B. 1790)
