ORILLA (CUNNINGHAM) SMITH [This was found in a scrapbook made by Climena Schaibly, now in possession of George Schaibly of Woodland, MI]
MRS. ORILLA SMITH PASSED AWAY SUNDAY--Poor Health for Several Years Ended Early Sunday. Funeral Tuesday Afternoon at Congregational Church. Leaves a Son and Daughter
Mrs. "Rilla" Smith as she was familiarly called passed away quietly early Sunday morning as her daughter Mrs. Frank Roberts was preparing her breakfast. She had been ill for several years, sometimes worse and sometimes better, but of late being able to get about the house somewhat.
She has always been of a most cheerful disposition, making many friends wherever she was. She was married twice, her husbands being brothers. She was a loyal member of the Rebekah lodge, always attending the meetings until ill health prevented. She was always a member of the Congregational church and a fine, loving mother, always looking on the bright side of life and bringing cheer to those around her.
Obituary Orilla Cunningham Smith was born in Woodland township, December 28, 1868 and on July 25, 1886 was married to Herbert Smith of Woodland. They came to Lake Odessa when the village was new and she has made her home there most of the time since. To this union were born two children, a son Homer and a daughter Hazel. The husband and father died about 30 years ago.
Many years later she married his brother Jonathan Smith and lived in Woodland township until his death several years ago. She then returned to her home in Lake Odessa where she died Sunday, August 7, at the age of 69 years, eight months and 12 days. She was lovingly cared for by her daughter Mrs. Frank Roberts of Lansing all through her illness.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational church with the pastor Rev. E. H. Humphrey officiating.
Besides her daughter she leaves a son Homer in Salem, Ore., a sister Mrs. Addie Lear of Grand Ledge, twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
