!CENSUS: 1910 U.S. Federal Census of Coamo, Puerto Rico shows Petrona as being 53 years old, and having been born in Puerto Rico. The census also states that she was married to her husband, Segundo, for 23 years, and that she had five children, of which one was living. Also, it states that she spoke Spanish and that she was not employed, but was a homemaker working in the home. They lived on Calle Roman Baldosioty. !She must have had much sadness in her life having lost four children. In 1899, she lost her second daughter, Serafina Del Carmen Bernier Giraud, about 10 years old, at death. Her first daughter to die, Lilia Carlotta Bernier Giraud, about 2 years old at death, died seven years earlier. Her parents are recorded as Baldemero Rivera and Marcelina Zambrana. Her age is given as 30 years of age and the record states that she was born in Juana Diaz but lived in Coamo. Segundo's age is given as 50 years of age and lived in Coamo. Witnesses were Juan Layas, from Coamo, and Genaro Rodriguez, from Juana Diaz. Segundo is shown to be a widower in the record. His first wife's name was Carolina Layas. Petrona was also a widow. Her husband's name was Juan Lopez. !DEATH-BURIAL: Buried in Municipal Cemetery (1921 Section); Grave headstone gives death date as 24 January, 1936 (Photograph in possession of James Halabuk, 303 Tabbs Lane, Newport News, VA 23502). Francisco Jose Bernier Santiago, her grand son is buried in the same vault as Petrona Rivera. Their names are on the same burial head stone. !AKA: Her name was also listed as Petronila Rivera in her daughter, Carmen Teresa's marriage record. |
